The ‘Boom or Bust’ Reality of Sunrisers Hyderabad

The IPL 2026 season has been a rollercoaster for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Despite sitting comfortably near the top of the points table, the franchise recently suffered a demoralizing defeat against the Gujarat Titans in match number 56. The loss was not merely a defeat; it was a total collapse, with the ‘Orange Army’ failing to chase a target of 169 and being bundled out for a mere 86 runs in just 14.5 overs.

This performance has ignited a debate regarding the team’s long-term sustainability in the tournament. Former Indian all-rounder and Chennai Super Kings legend Ravichandran Ashwin has been among the most vocal critics, labeling SRH a ‘boom or bust’ team that struggles significantly whenever the pitch offers even a hint of assistance to the bowlers.

Ashwin’s Critique: The Need for Adaptation

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin highlighted a recurring theme in SRH’s tactical approach. He noted that while the team is devastatingly effective at their home ground—the high-scoring Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad—they often appear lost when playing on surfaces that provide life for the bowlers.

“SRH is a boom or bust team, and with some life on the wicket, they’d struggle a bit,” Ashwin remarked. He suggests that the team’s recruitment and tactical drafting are heavily skewed toward their home conditions. While this strategy yields high-scoring spectacles at home, it creates a tactical vulnerability on the road.

Ashwin further elaborated: “SRH knows they have a high-scoring home pitch and they draft their side based on that, but they’d have to adapt to other conditions on the road. SRH have a very strong unit and they can challenge for the top-two spots, but their only pitfall is that, when the conditions don’t favor high-scoring games, I feel they trap themselves by trying to attack a bit too much.”

Breakdown of the Ahmedabad Collapse

The critique from Ashwin follows the events at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on May 12. Bowling first, SRH seemed in control for stages, with Praful Hinge (2-17) and Sakib Hussain (2-37) providing breakthroughs. However, the Gujarat Titans recovered well, fueled by fiery half-centuries from Sai Sudharsan (61 off 44) and Washington Sundar (50 off 33), setting a target of 168-5.

The second innings proved catastrophic for the visitors. The Titans’ bowling attack, spearheaded by Kagiso Rabada and Jason Holder—who each claimed three wickets—ripped through the SRH batting order. Captain Pat Cummins was the top scorer with an uncharacteristic 19 off 9 balls, illustrating the complete failure of the lineup to sustain pressure or adapt to the challenging surface.

The Path to the Playoffs

Despite the heavy defeat, SRH remains in a strong position. As of May 13, they hold third place in the IPL 2026 standings with seven wins and five losses from 12 matches and a healthy Net Run Rate (NRR) of 0.331. The qualification scenario remains firmly in their control.

To secure a spot in the top four, the franchise needs at least one victory in its remaining two matches, which would bring them to 16 points—a tally that has historically guaranteed playoff qualification. However, the schedule does not provide an easy path. SRH faces a high-stakes clash against the Chennai Super Kings on Monday, May 18, at the challenging Chepauk Stadium.

Whether SRH can overcome their ‘boom or bust’ reputation and prove they can succeed away from home will be the defining narrative of their season. Adapting to the spin-friendly conditions of Chennai will be the ultimate test of their tactical maturity and their ability to move beyond their home-ground comfort zone.
