The IPL 2026 Playoff Race Intensifies

The conclusion of match number 63 in the IPL 2026 season has brought clarity to a previously congested points table. With the tournament reaching its business end, three teams have officially cemented their presence in the playoffs. Following the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), both Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and the Gujarat Titans (GT) have successfully punched their tickets to the knockout stages.

The qualification of SRH was finalized in dramatic fashion at the iconic Chepauk Stadium. In a high-stakes encounter against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the Sunrisers chased down a target of 180 runs. Despite a shaky start, the clinical partnership between Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen steered the team to victory with six balls to spare, officially ending the uncertainty surrounding their campaign.

Mathematical Certainty for the Top Three

With this crucial win, Sunrisers Hyderabad moved to 16 points from 13 games, maintaining a solid Net Run Rate (NRR) of +0.350. They now sit comfortably in the third position on the points table. Joining them are the Gujarat Titans, who also boast 16 points but hold a superior NRR of +0.400. Because of the current mathematical landscape, teams like the Punjab Kings (max 15 points), Rajasthan Royals (max 14 points), and Kolkata Knight Riders (max 13 points) can no longer surpass the tallies of SRH or GT.

This development effectively turns the focus toward the final remaining playoff spot. The battle for the fourth position is now the primary concern for the chasing pack, with Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals standing as the most likely candidates to fill that slot.

The Battle for the Top Two

While the pressure of qualification has been lifted for RCB, GT, and SRH, the race for the top two spots remains fiercely competitive. Finishing in the top two is a massive advantage under the IPL playoff format, as it guarantees a place in Qualifier 1. The winner of Qualifier 1 advances directly to the tournament final, while the loser earns a second opportunity in Qualifier 2.

Currently, RCB appears to be the favorite to secure one of the top two berths. However, the final league fixtures will play a decisive role. Gujarat Titans are scheduled to face Chennai Super Kings on May 21, while Sunrisers Hyderabad will lock horns with RCB at the Uppal Stadium on May 22. These matches will be the final arbiters for the qualification order.

CSK’s Precarious Situation

The recent defeat against SRH has placed five-time champions Chennai Super Kings in a difficult position. Their path to the playoffs is no longer in their own hands. To remain in contention, CSK must win their final league game against Gujarat Titans decisively to boost their NRR. Even then, they are dependent on other results—specifically requiring the Punjab Kings to falter and hoping for favorable outcomes in the matches involving the Rajasthan Royals and KKR.

The inconsistency in the bowling department, highlighted by expensive spells from Anshul Kamboj and Noor Ahmad in the recent fixture, has left CSK vulnerable. As the league stage draws to a close, every ball carries immense weight for the teams still fighting for survival. The IPL 2026 season continues to deliver high-octane cricket, proving that in this league, nothing is certain until the final mathematical possibility is exhausted.
