CSK Skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad Stays Positive After LSG Defeat

Despite a lopsided loss to the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Ekana Stadium, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has kept his focus firmly on the future, expressing confidence in his teams ability to secure a playoff spot in IPL 2026.

The Men in Yellow entered the contest needing a win to maintain their momentum, but LSG had other plans. Riding on a disciplined bowling performance and an effective chase, Lucknow claimed their fourth victory of the season, handing CSK their first defeat after three consecutive wins.

Bowling Dominates at Ekana

After winning the toss and opting to bowl first, LSG captain Rishabh Pant made a tactical decision that paid off handsomely. The pitch offered early assistance to the bowlers, and the Lucknow attack capitalized from the outset. Chennais usually reliable top order fell flat, with Akash Singh dismantling the dangerous opening trio early in the innings.

Amid the batting collapse, youngster Kartik Sharma stood tall, scoring a composed 71 the highest individual score for CSK in the match. His effort helped the visitors post 187, a total Gaikwad later acknowledged as competitive, even if it wasnt enough on the day.

There was a feeling that the pitch had something in it for the bowlers. We found it difficult to score runs off hard lengths in the first innings. Lucknow did a good job with the ball. I felt that the team had done well to post a score of above 180. Initially, it seemed like 160170 would be enough, said Gaikwad in the post-match presentation.

Playoff Dreams Alive but Under Pressure

The defeat leaves CSK with a narrow path to the playoffs. With only two games remaining, the five-time champions must win both to stay in contention. Even then, their fate may depend on results elsewhere, as Punjab and Rajasthan are also locked in the race.

Yet, Gaikwad remains upbeat. He emphasized the teams improved form in both departments and dismissed the LSG loss as an off-day.

Heading into the final two games, the batting has started to click, and the team has been bowling well. It was an off-day (vs LSG), and we hope to bounce back, and I am really confident about my team. Need to win the final two games, it is simple, and there is no complication in this. Just have to capitalize on the good days and look to turn things around, the 29-year-old skipper remarked.

Selection Controversy Sparks Debate

The absence of Akeal Hosein from the playing XI drew sharp criticism, particularly from former CSK batter and India cricketer Subramaniam Badrinath. On social media, Badrinath questioned the team managements decision to bench the left-arm spinner, especially given the conditions.

Hosein, who delivered career-best figures of 4/17 against Mumbai Indians earlier this season, has been effectively used with the new ball. His omission on a pitch offering turn and variable bounce raised eyebrows, with Badrinath calling it another missed opportunity.

CSK losing because of team selection errors is becoming a pattern this season. Leaving out Akeal Hosein on this track made zero sense. Another game, another missed opportunity, Badrinath posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Road Ahead for the Men in Yellow

While the loss to LSG was a setback, CSK still control their destiny in the most critical phase of the tournament. The upcoming fixtures will demand peak performance, sharper strategies, and possibly fewer selection debates.

As Gaikwad and his men regroup, the faith within the camp remains strong. The challenge now is to convert that belief into results starting with their next match.

If the team can reclaim their rhythm and make the right calls, the dream of a sixth IPL title is far from over.
