A Season of Disappointment for Delhi Capitals

The 19th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been a campaign to forget for the Delhi Capitals. Currently sitting in seventh place with just 10 points from 12 matches, the franchise is all but mathematically ruled out of the playoff race. As they prepare to join the likes of the Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants on the sidelines, reports emerging from the inner circles of the franchise suggest that significant changes are on the horizon.

Coaching Staff Under Scrutiny

According to reports, the franchise owners have reached a breaking point following another underwhelming performance. Sources indicate that the current coaching staff, including Hemang Badani and Venugopal Rao, will not be retained for the upcoming season. The decision comes after mounting criticism from both fans and former players regarding the tactical management of the squad throughout the tournament.

The frustration stems from the team’s inability to leverage its talent pool effectively. Despite having several high-quality players on the roster, the Capitals have failed to find a consistent rhythm. Critics have pointed to questionable decision-making, particularly regarding the utilization of younger talents like Abhishek Porel and the inconsistent selection of all-rounder Madhav Tiwari. Furthermore, the handling of Sahil Parakh has drawn ire, with many suggesting the talented youngster was set up for failure by being expected to replicate the immediate high-level impact of players like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi without proper guidance or consistent backing.

The End of the Axar Patel Captaincy Era?

The structural changes extend beyond the coaching dugout. Axar Patel, who took on the mantle of leadership, is also expected to be removed from the captaincy. Axar’s dual role as a leader and an all-rounder has come under intense scrutiny throughout the 2026 season. Statistically, the returns have been underwhelming: in nine innings, he has managed only 100 runs at a strike rate of 112.50, with more than half of those runs coming in a single knock. With the ball, he has taken 10 wickets in 12 games while maintaining an economy rate of 8.08, though he has frequently been accused of under-bowling himself during critical junctures of the game.

An anonymous IPL source noted: “Axar hasn’t taken the decisions independently and has relied on Hemang Badani and Venugopal Rao for suggestions. It will be a miracle if he manages to get the captain’s armband next year.”

Ownership Transition and the Path Forward

The timing of these changes coincides with a significant shift in the franchise’s administrative structure. The Delhi Capitals are jointly managed by JSW and GMR, who operate under alternate cycles of ownership. As the power of operations shifts from GMR back to Parth Jindal’s JSW for the 20th season, a fresh approach is expected to be implemented.

While KL Rahul has been a rare bright spot for the team, accumulating over 450 runs and single-handedly propping up the batting order, the rest of the team has struggled to provide the necessary support. The upcoming off-season will be critical for the franchise as they look to rebuild their identity. With a change in the coaching setup and a likely change in leadership, the Delhi Capitals will hope to shed the ghosts of the 2026 season and return to their competitive roots when the tournament returns next year.
