Vaibhav Sooryavanshi: From IPL Sensation to India’s Next Big Hope

The cricketing landscape is abuzz with the name Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a young talent who has transitioned from a promising junior to a bona fide IPL star, capturing the attention of fans and former legends alike. His journey has been nothing short of spectacular, marked by record-breaking performances and a maturity beyond his years. The clamour for his inclusion in the senior Indian squad is growing louder, spearheaded by no less a figure than former India coach Ravi Shastri.

IPL Dominance: Two Seasons of Stardom

Sooryavanshi’s impact since his IPL debut has been truly exceptional. In IPL 2025, he shattered all pre-conceived notions and doubts from experts and fans, amassing over 250 runs, including a sensational century and a half-century. This impressive maiden season showcased his raw talent and fearless approach at the highest level of franchise cricket.

Many observers anticipated a ‘second-season blues’ for Sooryavanshi in IPL 2026, expecting rival teams to have dissected his game through extensive video analysis. However, the young sensation defied these predictions, elevating his game even further. Playing for the Rajasthan Royals, he has hammered an incredible 440 runs in just 11 games, boasting an astonishing strike rate of 236.56. This season has also seen him clear the boundary ropes 40 times, a testament to his incredible power-hitting. His century this year came against Sunrisers Hyderabad, a blistering 36-ball ton, which stands as the third-fastest in IPL history, falling just one delivery short of his own record of a 35-ball century set in IPL 2025. Such consistent, explosive performances underline his growing stature as one of the most dangerous batsmen in the league.

U19 World Cup Heroics: A Glimpse of Future Greatness

Before his IPL exploits, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi had already carved a name for himself in youth cricket, representing India across various formats. His most significant contribution came during India’s triumphant U19 World Cup campaign in 2024. In the final, he played a colossal role, scoring an astonishing 175 runs that utterly demoralized the England U19 team. His magnificent knock anchored India’s innings, propelling them to a formidable total exceeding 400 runs and ultimately securing the coveted trophy.

Ravi Shastri’s Strong Endorsement: The Door is Ajar

With his performances speaking volumes, it was only a matter of time before national selectors and former cricketers weighed in on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s international prospects. Former India coach Ravi Shastri has been among the most vocal proponents, advocating for the youthful opener’s immediate inclusion in the international squad.

Shastri, known for his forthright opinions, articulated his stance on ICC Review, stating, “The door would be three-fourths open. I can tell you that, for sure, because if you want to encourage or get someone young and into the setup as quickly as possible, then it’s the T20 format of the game, and he is not short by any margin. This guy can walk into a lot of sides in world cricket at this current moment in time. Just when you look at the exuberance of youth, and that youth shows on his face.” His words highlight not just Sooryavanshi’s skill but also his fearless attitude and the sheer joy he brings to the game, qualities that are invaluable in the high-pressure environment of international cricket.

Ireland Tour: The Perfect Launchpad?

Even with the next ICC Men’s T20 World Cup still a few years away in 2028, Shastri firmly believes that Sooryavanshi should not wait. He identified the upcoming tour of Ireland in June as the ideal opportunity for the youngster to make his India debut, potentially becoming one of the youngest players to don the national colours.

Dismissing any concerns about Sooryavanshi’s age, Shastri emphasized, “A lot of people will ask, is he 15? Is he 16? Is he 14? I don’t care. I just see the way he is batting at the moment and the way he’s taking on all comers twice his age or maybe two and a half times his age. It doesn’t matter to him. So, I think he’s very, very much in the reckoning. And when you have tours of Ireland and all this happening now, I would be looking into him straight away.” India is scheduled to play two T20Is in Ireland, followed by five T20Is in England, providing ample opportunities for new talent to emerge.

India A Call-Up: A Crucial Stepping Stone

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appears to be on a similar wavelength, having already begun the process of integrating Vaibhav Sooryavanshi into the national setup. The explosive opener was recently named in the India A squad, led by Tilak Varma. This team is set to travel to Sri Lanka in June to compete in an ODI tri-series, which will also feature Afghanistan A. This India A call-up is a critical step, offering Sooryavanshi invaluable exposure to international-level competition and conditions, preparing him for the ultimate leap to the senior national team.
