A Season of Scrutiny for Arshdeep Singh
The 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) has been a whirlwind for Punjab Kings (PBKS), but lately, the headlines have been dominated by the off-field conduct of one of their premier fast bowlers, Arshdeep Singh. Once celebrated for his vibrant personality and humor, the left-arm pacer now finds himself at the center of intense public scrutiny following a series of controversial episodes.
From Fan Favourite to Controversy
Arshdeep Singh’s transition from a beloved social media figure to a subject of heated debate has been rapid. What was once seen as a joyful, witty demeanor has, in the eyes of many critics, crossed the line into problematic territory. The most significant incident occurred when Arshdeep was caught on a viral Snapchat video making what many have labeled as colourist remarks toward his Indian teammate, Tilak Varma, referring to him as ‘Andhera’ (darkness). This incident triggered significant backlash, with social media users noting that this was not an isolated event, citing past comments directed at peers like Sai Sudharsan and Sakib Hussain.
Beyond these remarks, Arshdeep’s IPL 2026 campaign has been punctuated by other high-profile incidents. From rumors of a verbal altercation with teammate and captain Shreyas Iyer at an airport to being filmed with his rumoured partner, Samreen Kaur, on the team bus—a direct violation of BCCI protocols—the pacer has consistently been in the news for the wrong reasons. These incidents have reportedly led the franchise to advise the bowler to scale back his vlogging activities.
The Official Stance: Andrew Leipus Weighs In
Ahead of the crucial clash against the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, in Dharamsala, PBKS Head of Sports Science, Andrew Leipus, addressed the media. Tasked with answering questions regarding Arshdeep’s recent behavior, Leipus maintained a measured, professional perspective.
“I don’t follow a lot of social media myself,” Leipus stated when asked about the various controversies. “I know there’s been a bit of chatter behind the scenes regarding vlogging and other matters, but I am not fully across those details. In terms of his day-to-day behavior, Arsh is quite consistent. He is a very loud person in the dressing room, which hasn’t changed, but he remains calm and focused on his game.”
Physical Conditioning and Performance
Leipus shifted the focus to the technical and physical aspects of Arshdeep’s game. He suggested that some of the fluctuations in the pacer’s performance could be attributed to physical restrictions that the team is working hard to resolve. “He’s been feeling a lot better in the last couple of weeks, physically. We think we have hit on a winning formula for his conditioning, and he gives his best out on the field every single time he bowls.”
The Broader Issue of Social Media in Cricket
While discussing Arshdeep, Leipus also touched upon the growing challenge that modern technology poses to professional sports teams. The prevalence of constant connectivity, according to Leipus, can be a distraction.
“I’m probably the wrong person to ask about social media trends as I don’t engage with it much, but it is undoubtedly a problem for young players today,” Leipus admitted. “When you look across every team, you see players glued to their phones on buses. There’s very little interpersonal chatter. I believe one of the best things the ICC ever did was to restrict phone usage in the dressing room. It brought the conversation back to the team environment.”
Leipus acknowledged that while commercial operations are a necessary part of the modern game, finding the right balance is essential. “It is potentially something that needs to be addressed on a wider scale. We have our internal protocols, but the outside noise is something that players need to navigate carefully,” he concluded.
As the Punjab Kings push for a stronger standing in the latter half of the IPL 2026 season, the management will undoubtedly hope that the focus returns to the pitch, allowing the team to move past these distractions and continue their pursuit of the title.
