Virender Sehwag Demands KKR Sack Two Players Ahead of Crucial GT Clash

Pressure Mounts on KKR as Playoff Hopes Diminish
The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are currently weathering a storm of criticism as their IPL 2026 campaign teeters on the edge of disaster. Following a demoralizing six-wicket defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Raipur, the Ajinkya Rahane-led side is facing a mountain of pressure. With only 9 points from 11 matches, the three-time champions are languishing at 8th place on the points table, making their path to the playoffs nearly impossible.
As the team returns to their home turf at Eden Gardens for the first time since mid-April, the atmosphere is far from celebratory. The recent failure to defend a competitive total of 193 in Raipur exposed deep-seated vulnerabilities in both the batting and bowling departments. The top order’s inability to provide a stable foundation, coupled with a bowling attack that looked toothless without the injured Varun Chakravarthy, has left fans and pundits alike searching for answers.
Sehwag’s Brutal Demand: Drop Rovman Powell
Virender Sehwag, known for his straight-talking nature, did not hold back when discussing KKR’s current selection dilemmas. Speaking on Cricbuzz, the legendary opener pinpointed Rovman Powell as a significant liability in the playing XI. Powell, who was expected to be a powerhouse finisher for the franchise, has struggled to make any meaningful impact this season.
“I feel that he (Rovman Powell) is not making any contribution at all,” Sehwag stated firmly. “So, you can try to play Tim Seifert instead of him or even Rahul Tripathi.”
The suggestion to bring in New Zealand’s Tim Seifert is rooted in the need for tactical flexibility. Sehwag argued that Seifert’s ability to stabilize the innings or accelerate as needed provides a much-needed upgrade over Powell’s current form. By incorporating a player like Seifert or the experienced Rahul Tripathi, KKR could potentially solve their middle-order stagnation that has haunted them throughout the 2026 season.
The Bowling Crisis: Vaibhav Arora Under the Scanner
The critique did not stop with the batting. Sehwag also turned his attention to the bowling unit, which has struggled to contain runs in the death overs. Vaibhav Arora, in particular, bore the brunt of Sehwag’s analysis after a forgettable performance against RCB, where he conceded 48 runs in his four-over quota without picking up a single wicket.
Sehwag believes that the time for experimentation is over and KKR must look toward their bench strength to find a spark. He suggested that either the raw pace of Umran Malik or the experience of Navdeep Saini should be utilized in the remaining three league games. While Saini has had limited opportunities and Malik’s current form remains a question mark, Sehwag insists that sticking with the status quo is no longer an option for a team with its back against the wall.
Tactical Reshuffle: A New Batting Order?
Beyond personnel changes, Sehwag proposed a radical rethink of the batting order to maximize the potential of the remaining squad members. He suggested that the leadership should not be rigid about player roles. “It is not necessary that Seifert should open; he can be played at No. 3 as well. They can consider sending Raghuvanshi at No. 4, or Ajinkya Rahane can come in at No. 3; that can also be done,” Sehwag added.
This flexibility could allow KKR to better navigate the powerplay overs and ensure that their most technically sound batters are available to handle the middle-overs spin challenge, an area where they have consistently faltered this year.
Rohan Gavaskar’s Reality Check
Joining the discussion, former KKR player Rohan Gavaskar offered a more sobering perspective on the team’s mathematical chances. While the franchise is not technically eliminated, the reality of the situation is that their destiny is no longer in their own hands. Even a perfect run in their final three matches might not be enough to secure a top-four finish.
“What can you even say to the team at this point?” Gavaskar questioned. “Their first half did not go well. Although they are mathematically still in the playoffs race, for practical purposes, their qualification is not in their hands. It would have been better if their matches were against the teams placed above them. So, here, even if they keep winning, the teams above might also keep winning, so 15 points might not be enough.”
Looking Ahead to the Gujarat Titans Clash
The upcoming match against the red-hot Gujarat Titans on Saturday, May 16, represents a final stand for Kolkata. The Titans have been one of the most consistent teams of the tournament, and facing them at Eden Gardens will require KKR to play a near-perfect game. If the management heeds Sehwag’s advice and makes the “bold decisions” he advocates for, fans might see a revamped lineup take the field in a desperate attempt to keep the season alive. However, with the injury to Varun Chakravarthy and the lack of form among key overseas stars, the road ahead remains incredibly steep for the Men in Purple and Gold.
