The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) has officially confirmed that former seamer Yo Mahesh appointed TN head coach; Sandeep Patil named Mumbai mentor marks a transformative period for state-level cricket management. At 38 years old, Yo Mahesh steps into the role with a clear mandate to improve the team’s performance across all formats. Having previously demonstrated his tactical acumen while overseeing the state’s Under-19 squads, Mahesh is tasked with leading both the red-ball and white-ball teams for the upcoming 2026-27 domestic season.
This appointment follows a challenging campaign for Tamil Nadu, which struggled significantly throughout the 2025-26 season. The team faced a winless streak in the opening four rounds of the Ranji Trophy, leading to a split in coaching responsibilities between M Senthilnathan and M Venkataramana. Unfortunately, those efforts did not yield the desired results, as the side failed to qualify for the knockouts in the Ranji Trophy, the Vijay Hazare Trophy, and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
The Coaching Setup
The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) of the TNCA made the announcement on Wednesday, signaling a shift toward younger leadership. To bolster the white-ball campaign, J Hariesh has been brought in to assist Mahesh. Hariesh, currently serving as the head coach of the Lyca Kovai Kings in the TNPL and as an assistant batting coach for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, brings a wealth of modern T20 experience to the dressing room.
Yo Mahesh, who retired from all forms of cricket in 2020, brings a solid pedigree to the role. During his playing days, he proved to be a reliable performer, claiming 108 wickets in 50 first-class matches and 93 wickets in List A cricket at an impressive average of 24.67. His experience representing the Delhi Daredevils and Chennai Super Kings in the IPL further rounds out his coaching profile.
Mumbai Looks to Experience with Sandeep Patil
While Tamil Nadu focuses on a fresh start, Mumbai has opted to leverage the legendary status and technical expertise of a World Cup winner. The appointment of Sandeep Patil as the team’s mentor is seen as a strategic move to provide guidance to the squad and the existing coaching staff. Patil, 69, brings decades of cricketing wisdom to the role, having played 29 Tests and 45 ODIs for India between 1980 and 1986. His heroics in the 1983 World Cup, where he scored 216 runs at a strike rate of 90, remain etched in Indian cricketing history.
Beyond his playing career, Patil is a veteran of the coaching circuit. He has previously held key positions, including coaching the India A team and managing the Kenya national team on the international stage. His mentorship is expected to provide a stabilizing presence for a Mumbai side that remains highly ambitious.
Continuity for Mumbai
While the mentor position has changed, Mumbai has maintained continuity in its primary coaching role. Omkar Salvi has been retained as the head coach for a fourth consecutive season. Salvi’s track record is formidable; he recently achieved back-to-back IPL titles while serving as the bowling coach for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. By combining the legendary insight of Patil with the tactical expertise of Salvi, Mumbai aims to consolidate its position as a powerhouse in the Indian domestic circuit.
