Rajasthan Royals (RR) are facing a do-or-die situation in the ongoing IPL 2026, and the biggest question before their must-win clash against Delhi Capitals on May 17 in Delhi has been around captain Riyan Parag’s fitness. After missing the last game due to a hamstring injury, there is finally some good news coming from the Rajasthan Royals camp.

The Royals recently suffered a heavy 77-run defeat against the Gujarat Titans, a loss that pushed them out of the top four and left their playoff hopes hanging by a thread. However, if they manage to beat Delhi Capitals (DC) on Sunday, Rajasthan can jump back into the IPL 2026 playoff race.

Parag Back in Nets, Boosts Team Morale

Ahead of the crucial DC vs RR clash in Delhi, the Rajasthan Royals have received the biggest relief as captain Riyan Parag has returned to the nets. The young all-rounder has now recovered from the hamstring problem that forced him to miss the previous game against the Gujarat Titans.

The RR skipper was seen batting comfortably during the team’s practice session ahead of the Delhi Capitals match. He is now all but set to return to the playing XI for the big match on Sunday, providing a significant boost to the team’s batting lineup and leadership on the field.

Struggles with the Bat This Season

Parag entered IPL 2026 with the huge responsibility of leading the Rajasthan Royals as their full-time captain. While his captaincy has been impressive, he has failed to deliver with the bat this season. In 10 matches, Parag has scored 206 runs with an average of 22.89 and a strike rate of 143.06.

Despite these struggles, the franchise has shown faith in his leadership abilities, and his return could be the catalyst RR needs in this high-pressure encounter.

Sangakkara’s Advice and Confirmation

Rajasthan Royals head coach and director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara confirmed that Parag is expected to be available for the Delhi Capitals fixture. Sangakkara also offered some valuable advice to the young skipper, urging him to separate his roles as batter, captain, and leader.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Sangakkara said, “We were expecting him to be fully fit and ready. I think Riyan has three roles. One is captain, leader, and batter. Every single time, he’s got to separate the three a little bit. Captaincy and leadership go a little bit more hand-in-hand, whereas batting, he just has to enjoy his batting as Riyan Parag, the batter. I thought his captaincy this season had been excellent—very, very good. He’s learning very quickly. He’s making some good, great decisions out there.”

Royals’ Rocky Road in IPL 2026

The Rajasthan Royals are navigating a tough phase in IPL 2026. After a strong start with four consecutive wins, their momentum has faltered badly. They have now lost five of their last seven matches and are sitting fifth on the points table, which has made their playoff chances uncertain.

Sangakkara acknowledged the team’s strange schedule this season, with some back-to-back games followed by long breaks. During those breaks, the focus has been more on resting, regrouping, and improving team bonding rather than heavy training.

With Parag returning and the team desperate for a win, Sunday’s clash against Delhi Capitals could be the turning point in Rajasthan Royals’ season. All eyes will be on their captain to lead from the front and reignite their campaign.
