The Home Venue Dilemma: Ashwin’s Hard-Hitting Critique

In the high-stakes world of the Indian Premier League (IPL), stability is often the precursor to success. Ravichandran Ashwin, who once captained the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in 2018 and 2019, has turned the spotlight onto his former franchise, suggesting that the team’s management is largely to blame for their plummeting chances of qualifying for the IPL 2026 playoffs. According to the seasoned campaigner, the decision to rotate home stadiums has created a disruptive environment that prevents the team from building a true fortress.

The Strategy That Backfired

For the 2026 season, the Punjab Kings opted to split their seven designated home matches across two distinct venues: four at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur and three at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala. While the logic behind broadening the team’s reach is understood, Ashwin believes this comes at a significant cost to on-field performance.

The statistics present a grim picture. After a scorching start to the season where they secured six wins in their first seven matches, the Punjab Kings were riding high at the top of the points table. However, a sudden and violent reversal of fortune has seen the team fall into an unprecedented five-match losing streak. Of those five defeats, three occurred at home, highlighting the instability that Ashwin points to.

Comparing the Titans

To bolster his argument, Ashwin drew a sharp contrast between the Punjab Kings and the most successful franchises in IPL history. Speaking on Vimal Kumar’s YouTube channel, Ashwin pointed to the consistency of teams like the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), and the Mumbai Indians (MI).

“Let me ask you a question. KKR, CSK, and MI, the three teams that have won the highest number of trophies—3, 5, and 5—out of the 19 seasons, they have won 13 trophies in total. Have these teams ever changed their home venue?” Ashwin remarked. His point is clear: sustained excellence requires a consistent base of operations where players are accustomed to the surface, the conditions, and the rhythm of the pitch.

The Adaptation Trap

Ashwin emphasized that the challenges posed by changing venues are not merely psychological but technical. He noted that the wicket in Dharamsala behaves differently compared to Mullanpur, particularly with the ball staying low in the first half of the game. This forces batters to adjust their approach constantly, often leading to scores that are 20 to 40 runs below par.

“We can all say that Punjab are struggling and have suffered five consecutive defeats, or that ‘this is what happens in Punjab’. No, they have played two of those games at a changed home venue,” he explained. This lack of continuity, according to Ashwin, prevents the team from settling into a winning rhythm, ultimately jeopardizing their season.

High Stakes Ahead

The situation for Punjab is now critical. With their playoff hopes hanging by a thread, they are forced into a scenario where only victories in their remaining matches, combined with favorable results from other teams, will suffice. The challenge is immense, particularly as they prepare to face the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), in a high-voltage clash at the HPCA Stadium on May 17.

For RCB, a victory would secure their passage into the playoffs. For Punjab, a sixth consecutive loss would effectively signal the end of their 2026 campaign. As the tournament reaches its business end, the debate ignited by Ashwin regarding the importance of a permanent home base serves as a cautionary tale for franchises across the league. Whether the management takes these observations to heart remains to be seen, but for now, the Punjab Kings are left to grapple with the consequences of a strategy that has proven difficult to navigate on the field.
