Learning Beyond the Boundary
In the high-stakes environment of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the focus often shifts entirely to the players on the field. However, for New Zealand’s young sensation Rachin Ravindra, the 2026 season with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) offered a different, yet equally vital, kind of education. Despite not receiving a single opportunity to represent the side in the playing XI, Ravindra maintains that the weeks spent in the KKR dugout were among the most significant periods of his young career.
The Power of Mentorship
Ravindra’s perspective on professional cricket emphasizes that development occurs as much off the field as it does on it. Throughout the season, he made a conscious effort to absorb the tactical wisdom of those around him. Central to his learning experience was KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane. With a wealth of experience in challenging overseas conditions, particularly in England and Australia, Rahane provided insights that Ravindra believes will be crucial for his own performance in the upcoming Test matches.
“There are benefits to playing cricket and training. There are also massive benefits to being in the IPL too,” Ravindra remarked. “I mean, you get to talk to someone like Ajinkya Rahane, who’s a lovely man who’s played so much cricket overseas, scored a hundred at Lord’s, and played so much cricket against England and Australia away.”
A Support Staff of Legends
The guidance did not stop with the captain. Ravindra benefited from a high-caliber coaching staff, including former Australian batting legend Shane Watson and coach Abhishek Nayar. Having worked closely with the Indian national team previously, Nayar’s expertise in batting mechanics and preparation provided a solid foundation for the Kiwi all-rounder. Meanwhile, Watson’s international experience added another layer of tactical depth, as he shared nuanced advice on how to navigate the technical demands of facing elite bowling attacks.
Conversations with Greatness
Beyond his own team, Ravindra took the opportunity to engage with other titans of the sport. The IPL environment allows for a unique melting pot of talent, and Ravindra utilized his time to seek advice from the likes of Virat Kohli and KL Rahul. For an emerging player, the chance to discuss the mental approach and technical adjustments required for long-term success is invaluable. “Being able to sit down and talk to Virat about batting or talking to KL Rahul—all these guys who’ve done well and had success over periods of time,” Ravindra noted, highlighting that these interactions provided a mental edge before the start of the busy Test season.
Gratitude and Preparation
As the international schedule looms, Ravindra expressed his sincere gratitude toward the Kolkata Knight Riders management. The franchise demonstrated significant understanding by allowing him to return home early, ensuring he could refresh mentally and physically before rejoining the New Zealand squad. This break has allowed him to spend time with family and focus on specialized training.
“KKR was very welcoming and understanding of the situation. It made it easier since I wasn’t playing. It’s a great little refresh. We spend so much time away from home,” Ravindra explained. This flexibility has proven to be a major boost for the youngster, who is now fully primed for the challenges ahead.
Looking Ahead to the Test Season
With his stint in the IPL concluded, Ravindra is set to transition back to the longest format of the game. He will be a key figure for New Zealand in the upcoming one-off Test match against Ireland, scheduled to begin on May 27 in Belfast. Following that, the Black Caps will embark on a high-profile three-match Test series against England, starting June 4 at the historic Lord’s Cricket Ground. The lessons learned in the KKR camp, combined with his natural talent, will undoubtedly be put to the test in these challenging encounters.
