Mushfiqur Rahim Closes Door on ODI Comeback
One of Bangladesh’s most decorated limited-overs stalwarts, Mushfiqur Rahim, has firmly ruled out a return to the ODI side, confirming that while he was approached to reconsider his retirement, he has chosen to stand by his decision.
During a pre-match press conference in Sylhet on Friday, Mushfiqur addressed growing speculation about a potential comeback, stating, “I did get the message (to return to the ODI side), but I feel that they don’t need my service any longer. They are doing well, and they will keep getting better.”
Leadership Backs Veteran Return
It has been reported that ODI captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz initiated discussions over the past few months about bringing Mushfiqur back into the fold. Miraz had previously expressed his belief in the veteran’s value, especially amid growing concerns over Bangladesh’s unstable middle order.
That fragility was on full display during the recent ODI series against New Zealand, where the batting lineup suffered a dramatic collapse in the first match. Without a consistent anchor in the middle overs, the team has struggled to build resilient partnerships.
Recognizing the need for experience, Miraz publicly endorsed Mushfiqur’s return, citing his leadership, composure, and proven track record under pressure.
Legacy of a Middle-Order Pillar
Mushfiqur Rahim’s ODI career spanned over 15 years, during which he established himself as one of Bangladesh’s most reliable and prolific batters. He retired from the format last year after the team’s early exit from the Champions Trophy, having scored 7,795 runs in 274 matches—the second-highest run tally in Bangladesh ODI history.
His nine centuries and numerous match-saving or match-winning knocks earned him a reputation as the backbone of the middle order from 2009 to 2025. He first gained international attention during the 2007 World Cup, when he was surprisingly selected over veteran wicketkeeper Khaled Mashud—a decision that paid off handsomely in the long run.
Focusing on Tests and Domestic Cricket
Since stepping away from ODIs, Mushfiqur has remained active in Test cricket and continues to represent Bangladesh in the longest format. He also retired from T20 Internationals in 2022.
On the domestic front, he participated in 10 matches last season in the Dhaka Premier League and has signed with Mohammedan Sporting Club for the current edition, although he has yet to feature in a game this year.
Confidence in the New Generation
Mushfiqur’s decision reflects not just personal conviction but also faith in the current squad’s trajectory. With younger batters getting opportunities and captain Miraz at the helm, the team is undergoing a transitional phase focused on long-term development.
By declining the comeback offer, Mushfiqur sends a clear message: his chapter in ODI cricket has ended, and it’s time for the new guard to carry the baton forward.
Though fans may have hoped to see his gritty batting one more time in the 50-over format, his legacy remains untarnished—a testament to resilience, adaptability, and unwavering service to Bangladesh cricket.
