Simon Helmot has been appointed head coach of the Gulf Giants for the upcoming season of the Intl League T20 (ILT20), stepping into the role after Jonathan Trott‘s departure following a single season in charge.

The Coaching Change Explained
Helmot, an experienced Australian coach, takes the reins after Trott oversaw a fifth-place finish in his only campaign with the franchise. While Gulf Giants lifted the trophy in the inaugural 2023 season under Andy Flower, last year’s performance failed to meet expectations, prompting a shift in leadership.
Flower was succeeded by Trott ahead of the 2023–24 season, and now Helmot becomes the third head coach in just three years—a sign of the franchise’s intent to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving T20 landscape.
A Familiar Face With Proven Experience
Helmot is no stranger to high-pressure roles. He was most recently head coach of the Melbourne Renegades in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), a position he left last month despite having two years remaining on his contract. At the time, the Renegades confirmed he was stepping down to “explore a new opportunity”—now confirmed as the ILT20 role.
The scheduling shift of the ILT20 from January to November 22 to December 20 aligns directly with the WBBL season, making concurrent commitments impractical. This new calendar aims to reduce clashes with other major leagues such as Australia’s Big Bash and South Africa’s SA20, boosting player availability and global visibility.
Building Long-Term Vision
Helmot, who is currently serving as assistant coach with Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League, met with Gulf Giants’ ownership in Ahmedabad to finalize the deal. In a statement, he emphasized the long-term ambitions of the franchise.
“My discussions with Mr. Pranav Adani [director of the Adani Group, which owns the Gulf Giants] reflected our shared long-term commitment towards building strong sporting ecosystems, nurturing talent, and creating competitive teams,” Helmot said.
This strategic focus suggests the Giants are investing not just in immediate results, but in sustainable success through infrastructure and development.
What Lies Ahead for Gulf Giants?
With the fifth season of the ILT20 set to begin in late November, preparations are already underway. The player auction is expected to take place in early October, giving Helmot a critical window to shape his squad and implement his vision.
The Giants will be eager to return to the top after falling short last season. Helmot’s leadership, coupled with international experience across leagues in Australia, India, and now the UAE, positions him as a well-rounded candidate to guide the team’s revival.
- Tournament Dates: November 22 – December 20, 2024
- Player Auction: Early October 2024
- Previous Season Finish: 5th place (2023–24)
- Head Coach History: Andy Flower (2023), Jonathan Trott (2023–24), Simon Helmot (2024–25)
As the T20 franchise calendar grows more congested, the ILT20’s strategic scheduling and rising investment are helping it carve out a distinct space in global cricket. With Simon Helmot at the helm, the Gulf Giants are signaling ambition—not just to compete, but to lead.
The UAE is ready to shine again, and this time, the Giants are aiming higher.”
