The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has officially confirmed that former national team captain Khaled Mahmud Sujon is set to return to the organization in a specialized capacity. Following a storied career that has seen him serve the sport as a player, coach, team director, and board official, Sujon is now stepping into the role of advisor for the country’s age-group cricket programs. This appointment marks a homecoming for a man whose fingerprints are already all over the nation’s most significant youth achievements.

Building on a Legacy of Development

Khaled Mahmud Sujon is no stranger to the inner workings of the BCB. Previously, he served as a board director and chaired the influential Game Development Committee. It was under his tenure in that specific role that Bangladesh reached the pinnacle of youth cricket, securing the ICC Under-19 World Cup title in 2020. His track record in nurturing talent is well-documented, making him an ideal candidate to steer the ship of age-group cricket once again.

Reflecting on the appointment, Sujon shared that the decision followed extensive discussions with BCB President Tamim Iqbal. The two reached an agreement on a two-year contract, a period Sujon hopes to utilize to solidify the pipeline of young talent feeding into the national squad. “I was discussing this with Tamim for quite a while now. I have been given a two-year deal. This is work I like doing. I have spent most of my coaching life in development and age-group cricket,” Sujon noted in his recent comments.

Why Sujon is the Right Fit

The transition into an advisory role for youth cricket feels like a natural progression for Sujon. His intimate understanding of the domestic landscape, combined with his high-level international experience, provides a unique perspective. Having worked extensively with young players even during his time away from official board duties, he remains deeply connected to the challenges faced by emerging cricketers.

“When I was chairman of the BCB development committee, I tried my best to develop cricketers at that level. We won the Youth World Cup as well. After leaving the board, I mostly worked as a coach with age-group cricketers. The new role is an ideal one for me. I hope I will be able to do something good in these two years,” he added.

Sujon’s career path has been anything but linear. During the tenure of former BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon, he took on high-pressure roles, including serving as the team director for the Bangladesh national team across various ICC tournaments and bilateral series. Beyond his board and national team commitments, Sujon has maintained a constant presence in the domestic circuit.
