Karn Sharma Announces Retirement from All Forms of Cricket

Veteran leg-spinner Karn Sharma has officially announced his retirement from both international and Indian domestic cricket at the age of 38. The seasoned cricketer, who represented India in one Test, two One Day Internationals, and one T20 International, conveyed his decision on Saturday night after a UP T20 league match between Kanpur Superstars and Meerut Mavericks. His illustrious career will formally conclude following his team’s final fixture of the Lucknow leg, scheduled for August 25.

In a heartfelt statement delivered during his announcement, Sharma expressed profound gratitude for the unwavering support he received throughout his journey. “I now want to retire,” he stated, reflecting on his extensive time in the sport. “I am extremely grateful to my family, BCCI, Railways, UPCA, Andhra, Vidarbha Cricket Association and everyone who has supported me throughout this journey.” Looking ahead, Sharma also indicated his desire to remain involved with the sport, adding, “After this, I will be available for coaching and other responsibilities related to the game of cricket,” signaling a potential transition into mentorship and development roles.

A Promising Start and Domestic Dominance

Karn Sharma’s professional cricket journey commenced during the 2007-08 domestic season, where he made his first-class, List A, and T20 debuts. From the outset, he showcased his capabilities not just as a bowler but also as a burgeoning all-rounder. A testament to his batting prowess, Sharma scored a century in his very first Ranji Trophy match, an impressive feat that immediately underscored his potential. While his initial years were consistent, his breakthrough season arrived in 2012-13. During this period, he took an impressive 21 wickets at an average of 19.04 in just three Ranji matches, a performance that earned him the prestigious BCCI’s Best Under-25 Cricketer award and firmly placed him on the national radar.

His consistent domestic performances and all-round abilities did not go unnoticed by the Indian Premier League franchises. In 2014, the Sunrisers Hyderabad secured his services for a then-record sum of INR 3.75 crore. This acquisition marked him as the highest-priced uncapped Indian player at that time, highlighting the immense faith placed in his talent and potential. His ability to deliver crucial breakthroughs with the ball and contribute with the bat made him a valuable asset in the high-stakes environment of the IPL.

International Opportunities and Brief Stints

Sharma’s stellar form eventually caught the eye of the national selectors, leading to his inclusion in India’s limited-overs squad for the 2014 tour of England. He made his T20 International debut during this tour, where he famously dismissed the formidable Joe Root, marking a memorable moment in his brief international career. Soon after, he was also selected for India’s One Day International squad for the series against Sri Lanka.

His ODI debut came in an iconic match where fellow Indian opener Rohit Sharma etched his name into the record books by scoring an astounding 264 runs, the highest individual score in men’s ODI history. Karn Sharma played one more ODI in that series but, unfortunately, could not secure any wickets. Later that same year, his versatility saw him included in India’s red-ball squad for the challenging tour of Australia. He featured in the Adelaide Test match, where he demonstrated his temperament by taking two wickets in each innings, contributing to the team’s efforts in a demanding environment.

However, the Adelaide Test proved to be Karn Sharma’s last international appearance. He was subsequently picked for a limited-overs tour of Zimbabwe in 2015, but an untimely injury unfortunately forced his omission from the squad. In the decade that followed, despite his continued efforts in domestic cricket, he never managed to add to his four international caps.

IPL Glory and Domestic Odyssey

While his international career was short-lived, Karn Sharma left an indelible mark on the Indian Premier League. He achieved a truly remarkable and rare feat by becoming the first player to win three consecutive IPL titles with three different franchises. This incredible run began with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016, followed by Mumbai Indians in 2017, and culminating with Chennai Super Kings in 2018. This unique hat-trick of titles with distinct teams underscores his adaptability, skill, and the high regard in which he was held by various IPL management teams.

During this period of IPL success, Sharma continued to be a prominent figure in the domestic circuit. He represented Vidarbha during the 2017-18 domestic season and then moved to Andhra for the 2018-19 season, before eventually returning to his home team, Railways, where he continued to contribute significantly across all three formats.

A Legacy of Consistent Performance

Karn Sharma’s final appearances in the IPL were for Mumbai Indians, and he remained a fixture for the Railways teams across all three formats in his concluding domestic season. A testament to his longevity and dedication, he had the opportunity to reach the significant milestone of 100 first-class appearances but will now finish just three matches short of that mark, concluding his career with 97 first-class games.

His first-class statistics are impressive: in 97 matches, he claimed 270 wickets at an average of 27.60, including 14 five-wicket hauls, showcasing his consistent wicket-taking ability. Beyond his bowling, he also proved to be a reliable lower-order batsman, accumulating 2,866 runs in 138 first-class innings, featuring two centuries and 14 half-centuries.

In List A cricket, Sharma featured in 123 matches, taking 153 wickets, which included three five-wicket hauls. With the bat, he added another century and six half-centuries. His T20 career was equally prolific, with 168 wickets from 191 matches, including 87 wickets in 90 IPL appearances. He also contributed with two half-centuries in the shortest format of the game.
