Heather Knight delivered a masterclass with the bat, scoring a chanceless 103, as Somerset posted their highest ever List-A total of 337 for 9 to demolish Surrey by 136 runs in the Metro Bank One Day Cup at the Cooper Associates Ground, Taunton.

Record-Breaking Batting Display
Winning the toss and electing to bat, Somerset got off to a shaky start, losing openers Niamh Holland and Bex Odgers inside six overs with just 28 on the board. Both fell to Maitlan Brown, leaving the hosts in early trouble.
Enter Heather Knight and Sophie Luff. The experienced duo anchored a composed recovery, building a 139-run stand for the third wicket. They approached with caution early, compiling 50 in 75 balls, but gradually accelerated with intelligent placement and sharp running.
Knight reached her half-century in 61 balls, launching Alice Monaghan for a straight six. Luff, initially supporting, grew in confidence and brought up her own 57-ball fifty—her second of the campaign—helping Somerset reach 139 for 2 at the halfway mark.
Gibson Ignites the Death Overs
Luff’s dismissal for 57 in the 29th over—caught at mid-off off Brown—slowed the momentum briefly, but it was short-lived. Dani Gibson arrived with intent, smashing 77 off just 37 balls in a devastating cameo.
Knight, ever the tactician, reached a flawless century from 104 deliveries, his 100 laced with nine fours. He wisely rotated strike to unleash Gibson, and their 85-run partnership for the fifth wicket raced to 50 in only 33 balls.
Gibson was pure aggression—launching 11 fours and two sixes—to the delight of the Taunton crowd. Her whirlwind knock was finally ended by Dani Gregory, but by then, Somerset were 296 for 6 and cruising.
Extras provided late impetus: Charlie Dean smashed 25 off 23, and Jess Hazell remained unbeaten on 18. Somerset’s 337 for 9 surpassed their previous List-A best, set against Essex in 2025.
Surrey’s Chase Falters Despite Bright Starts
Surrey’s reply began with Bryony Smith dismissed for a duck by Alex Griffiths, but Alice Capsey and Alice Davidson-Richards quickly steadied with a 76-run stand.
Capsey looked in sublime form, reaching 59 off 58 balls with nine boundaries, while Davidson-Richards struck 48 from 37. Their aggressive start brought Surrey to 74 for 2 after the powerplay, maintaining the run rate.
But Somerset’s spin duo struck back. Lola Harris (3 for 44) dismissed Davidson-Richards for 48, driving to a diving Knight at mid-off. Soon after, Harris took a sharp return catch to remove Kira Chathli.
The pivotal moment came when Charlie Dean (3 for 22) had Capsey caught at cover by Luff for 59. With the score at 159 for 5, the chase unravelled.
Spin Strangles Surrey
Former England star Dani Wyatt-Hodge briefly threatened with 38 off 33 balls, but her cut shot off Holland was brilliantly caught by Dean at point—ending Surrey’s resistance at 195 for 7.
Chloe Skelton cleaned up the tail, removing Brown and Gregory, while Dean wrapped up the innings by bowling Corteen-Coleman. Surrey were bowled out for 201 in 33.2 overs—their first defeat in four matches.
Somerset, meanwhile, extended their winning streak to three and solidified their dominance with a record-setting performance powered by Knight’s leadership and Gibson’s fireworks.
