A Strategic Shake-up: CSK Parts Ways with Matheesha Pathirana
In a move that has sent shockwaves through the IPL community, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have officially decided to release Sri Lankan fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana from their squad. The decision comes as the franchise prepares for the upcoming IPL 2026 season, marking a significant departure from their previous strategy with the young speedster.
The news broke on Saturday, emerging in the final hours before the IPL retention window slammed shut at 3:00 PM. This is particularly surprising given that CSK had previously shown immense faith in the bowler, acquiring him ahead of IPL 2023 and subsequently retaining him before the 2025 mega auction for a staggering INR 13 crore.

Matheesha Pathirana first captured the imagination of cricket fans during the 2023 season. With his unique, slingy action and the ability to consistently clock speeds of 140-plus kmph, he became an immediate asset in the death overs. During CSK’s title-winning 2023 campaign, Pathirana was clinical, claiming 19 wickets in 12 matches while maintaining a disciplined economy rate of 8.01.
However, the warning signs were present early on. Former captain MS Dhoni, known for his keen eye for player longevity, had cautioned that Pathirana’s unique physical exertion would require meticulous management by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). Dhoni emphasized that for Pathirana to sustain a long professional career, his workload and recovery would need to be handled with extreme care.
A Battle with Fitness and Form
Unfortunately, Dhoni’s concerns proved prescient. Pathirana’s journey since his breakout season has been marred by physical setbacks. His IPL 2024 campaign was severely curtailed due to a hamstring injury, which robbed him of critical match time. His struggles extended beyond the IPL; he was forced to leave the SA20 midway through his stint with the Joburg Super Kings to return home for recovery.
When he returned for IPL 2025, the impact was noticeably diminished. While he managed to pick up 13 wickets across 12 matches, his economy rate ballooned to 10.13, a concerning figure for a bowler primarily utilized to stifle runs in the final overs of an innings.
CSK head coach Stephen Fleming expressed the franchise’s concerns during the season, noting a drop in the bowler’s overall impact. Fleming suspected that technical tweaks made by Sri Lanka Cricket to Pathirana’s release point might have been counterproductive, causing the bowler to struggle with his natural rhythm and effectiveness.
The Abu Dhabi Gamble
Despite the release, this may not be a permanent goodbye. Sources indicate that CSK’s decision is a tactical maneuver. By releasing Pathirana now, the franchise creates flexibility in their purse, with the distinct possibility of attempting to buy him back during the auction in Abu Dhabi on December 16.
Over three seasons, Pathirana’s cumulative record for CSK remains impressive: 47 wickets in 32 matches, averaging 21.61 with an overall economy of 8.68. His raw talent remains undeniable, but the franchise is now weighing that talent against the risk of recurring injuries and fluctuating form.
A New Era: The Great CSK Roster Overhaul
The release of Pathirana is part of a much larger transformation within the Chennai camp. CSK is entering the auction as one of the few teams with a significant financial purse, having cleared significant space in their roster. The franchise has also decided to release key international players, including the New Zealand duo of Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra.
