A Commanding Performance at the Crease
The Seattle Orcas delivered a masterclass in T20 cricket on Thursday, showcasing their potential with a resounding victory over the Washington Freedom. After a shaky start to the MLC 2026 season, winning only one of their opening three fixtures, the Orcas needed a statement performance. They certainly provided one, effectively dismantling the Freedom to secure an 88-run win that vaults them into the second position on the points table.
The Orcas set the tone early, reaching 59 for no loss during the powerplay. While the scoring rate dipped slightly toward the middle overs, reaching 79 for 2 at the halfway stage, the late-innings fireworks were truly a sight to behold. Matthew Breetzke provided a solid platform with 32 runs, but the real momentum shift came when Shimron Hetmyer and captain Marcus Stoinis took control.
The Hetmyer and Stoinis Power Surge
At the 15-over mark, the Orcas were at 138 for 3, a solid position but not necessarily one that hinted at a massive total. However, the closing stages turned into an exhibition of aggressive batting. Shimron Hetmyer was already in destructive form, racing to his half-century off just 24 balls. Marcus Stoinis, meanwhile, shifted gears in the 17th over against medium-pacer Ian Holland, smashing five sixes in a single over. By the time Stoinis departed for a blistering 42 off 16 balls, he had completely demoralized the Freedom bowling attack.
Hetmyer continued his assault until the very last ball of the innings. Facing Jack Edwards in the final over, he struck three consecutive sixes to propel the Orcas to a daunting total of 227 for 6. Hetmyer finished the innings unbeaten on 79 from 33 deliveries, an innings defined by timing and sheer power.
Jasdeep Singh Destroys the Chase
Facing a monumental target of 228, the Washington Freedom needed a disciplined and explosive start. Instead, they suffered an immediate collapse, finding themselves reeling at 42 for 5 after the powerplay. The Orcas’ bowling unit, spearheaded by Jasdeep Singh, was clinical. Jasdeep took apart the Freedom top order, dismissing Steven Smith, Mitchell Owen, Andries Gous, Glenn Maxwell, and Jack Edwards.
The highlight of the bowling performance was Jasdeep’s fifth over, where he claimed three wickets in a single over, removing Gous, Maxwell, and Edwards to effectively kill the contest. Jasdeep finished with exceptional figures of 5 for 24, having also dismissed Smith earlier in his spell and claiming Marco Jansen to complete his five-wicket haul in the 14th over.
A Late Respite for Freedom
For a brief period, it appeared the Seattle Orcas might threaten the MLC record for the largest margin of victory by runs—currently held by the San Francisco Unicorns. However, the Freedom tail-enders managed to add some respectability to the scorecard. Amila Aponso, batting at number ten, provided an entertaining unbeaten 31 off 13 balls, while Ian Holland and Marco Jansen combined for 46 runs. Despite their efforts, the Washington Freedom were ultimately restricted to 139 all out.
This defeat leaves the Washington Freedom at the bottom of the table, having lost two of their first three matches. For the Seattle Orcas, the dominant victory serves as a reminder of their championship credentials, as they look to build on this momentum for the remainder of the tournament.
