While the exits are numerous, the Capitals have found a pillar of stability in T Natarajan. The capped India pacer, renowned as a yorker specialist, has been retained by the franchise. Having been signed for INR 10.75 crore at last year’s mega auction, Natarajan remains a critical component of DC’s death-bowling strategy, providing the control and wicket-taking ability necessary in the final overs of a T20 match.
The Decline of Faf du Plessis at DC
The decision to release Faf du Plessis marks the end of a stint that failed to live up to the veteran’s legendary reputation. Signed in 2024 for a base price of INR 2 crore, the 41-year-old South African struggled to find his rhythm in the IPL 2025 campaign. His returns were underwhelming, managing only 202 runs across nine appearances.
More concerning for the DC management was his strike rate, which plummeted to 123.92. These figures stand in stark contrast to the explosive form du Plessis displayed for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). During his tenure with RCB, he amassed 438 runs in 15 innings at a commanding strike rate of 161.62, playing a pivotal role in propelling the team from the bottom of the table into the playoffs. The inability to replicate this impact at the Delhi Capitals has made his departure inevitable.
The Rise and Fall of Jake Fraser-McGurk
Perhaps the most shocking name on the release list is Jake Fraser-McGurk. When DC first signed him in 2024, the franchise publicly labeled him as a “player for the future.” For a brief period, it seemed the label was accurate. His intent-laden batting was a breath of fresh air, yielding 222 runs off just 81 deliveries, providing the fireworks DC desperately needed during the latter stages of their 2024 campaign.
The franchise’s faith in him was so strong that they utilized the right-to-match card to secure his services for IPL 2025. However, the subsequent season was a narrative of struggle. Fraser-McGurk’s aggressive approach failed to translate into runs, as he recorded five single-digit scores in six matches. With a total tally of just 55 runs and a best of 38, he eventually lost his place in the starting XI and was benched.

Fraser-McGurk’s exit was further complicated by off-field circumstances. When the IPL season was paused due to cross-border tensions with Pakistan, Fraser-McGurk returned home. Despite the season resuming, he opted to stay back, leading the franchise to sign Bangladesh’s left-arm seamer Mustafizur Rahman as a temporary replacement.
Under IPL regulations, temporary replacements cannot be retained by the franchise. Consequently, Mustafizur Rahman will also enter the auction pool, meaning DC is parting ways with two international talents in one stroke.
Bowling Struggles and Recent Form
The bowling department also sees a departure in Mohit Sharma. The former India pacer struggled for consistency, picking up only two wickets in eight games while conceding runs at an expensive economy rate of 10.28. In a tournament where economy rates are paramount, these numbers were simply unsustainable.
Furthermore, Fraser-McGurk’s recent form outside the IPL suggests a broader slump. In three List A games against India A, his highest score was 36. His domestic form for South Australia has been equally lukewarm, with scores of 34, 27, and 4 in three recent outings. Even his stint in Major League Cricket with the San Francisco Unicorns failed to spark a resurgence, leaving him in a precarious position heading into the auction.
