Glenn Maxwell’s third stint with the Punjab Kings proved to be an underwhelming chapter in his illustrious career. Acquired at the 2025 auction for INR 4.2 crore, the Australian powerhouse was expected to be the engine room of the middle order. However, the season took a drastic turn when Maxwell sustained a fractured finger midway through the tournament.

His statistical output for the 2025 season reflects the struggle. Across seven games, Maxwell managed to score only 48 runs in six innings. The lack of impact was most evident in his final four appearances, where he failed to reach double figures in every single game. His highest score for the runners-up was a modest 30. While he did provide some utility with the ball, picking up four wickets, his primary role as a match-winner with the bat went unfulfilled.

It is worth noting that Maxwell’s struggles in the IPL did not fully mirror his international form. Having retired from ODIs in June, he remained active in T20Is, where he amassed 171 runs at a strike rate of 169.30, including a standout 62 not out against South Africa in Cairns. Despite this, the lack of synergy between his international success and his IPL performances has led PBKS to move in a different direction.

The Mitchell Owen Gamble

As Maxwell dealt with his injury, PBKS turned to fellow Australian Mitchell Owen. Owen arrived with a massive reputation, having dominated the Big Bash League (BBL) with the Hobart Hurricanes. In BBL 13, Owen was a force of nature, topping the run-scoring charts with 452 runs at a staggering strike rate of 203.60, including two centuries.

However, the transition to the IPL is rarely seamless. Owen’s debut was a nightmare, as he was dismissed for a two-ball duck in his only appearance for the franchise. Despite this forgettable start, Punjab Kings see enough potential in the young powerhouse to retain him. Having procured Owen at his base price of INR 3 crore, the management believes his BBL pedigree outweighs a single unlucky outing in India.

Clearing the Decks: The Other Departures

Maxwell is not the only high-profile exit. PBKS are conducting a thorough cleaning of their roster to free up purse space and slots for the upcoming auction. The list of players set to be released includes:

• Kyle Jamieson: The New Zealand pacer joined as a replacement for the injured Lockie Ferguson. While he showed flashes of quality, picking up five wickets in four matches, he is no longer seen as a core part of the future bowling attack.
• Praveen Dubey: The spinner had very limited opportunities, featuring in just one game during the season.
• Aaron Hardie, Kuldeep Sen, and Vishnu Vinod: In a disappointing turn for these players, none of the three made a single appearance for PBKS during the IPL 2025 season, making their release an inevitable outcome.
