I think it’s going to do the opposite.”
The Debate: Red-Ball vs. White-Ball Development
The controversy ignited when Alastair Cook publicly suggested that a player of Bethell’s potential would be better served playing domestic red-ball cricket rather than, in Cook’s words, “sitting on his arse” at the IPL. However, the viewpoint is not universal. Others, including the outspoken Kevin Pietersen, have vehemently defended the move, arguing that the exposure to the IPL ecosystem offers a unique acceleration for a young player’s development that cannot be replicated in the domestic circuit.
Bethell, for his part, has chosen to stay above the fray. When reminded of the comments made during a period when he was not featuring in the RCB starting XI, he remained diplomatic. “Everyone’s allowed to have their opinions,” he noted. “That’s absolutely fine. Everyone thinks differently, but from a personal point of view, I think I’ve made the right decision. At the end of the day, I’m pretty happy with where I am.”
Finding Rhythm at the Top
After a breakthrough performance at the T20 World Cup, expectations for Bethell were sky-high. An injury to Phil Salt finally opened a gap for him to showcase his skills at the top of the order for RCB. Bethell himself is his own harshest critic. He is not viewing his current run as a fight for his position, but rather as a personal challenge to contribute to the collective success of the team. “I never really feel like I’m fighting for a spot,” he explained. “My aim as a batter is to go out there and score runs and get us off to a good start, and I haven’t done that. There’s a burning desire to go out there and put in a match-winning performance.”

One of the most significant perks of his current assignment is the opportunity to open the batting alongside Virat Kohli. When asked about the experience, Bethell’s appreciation is evident. He noted that batting with a player of Kohli’s stature actually helps him play more freely. “People are only watching him, so a lot of the pressure is off,” Bethell said. “It’s not something that burdens you; it’s more something that allows you to play freely.”
The conversation took a lighter turn when the topic shifted to comparisons with fellow young prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, with even AB de Villiers weighing in on the talent. Bethell laughed off the comparisons, humbly remarking, “I don’t think I’ve ever scored 50 in 14 balls or whatever. Vaibhav’s obviously a great player, but to have someone like AB mention me in those remarks is pretty cool.”

As the tournament progresses, the focus for Bethell remains singular: the next ball. He acknowledges the difficulty of finding rhythm without consistent time in the middle but remains committed to the process.
