In a move that blends promise with proven performance, Bangladesh selectors have handed maiden Test call-ups to top-order batter Tanzid Hasan and wicketkeeper-batter Amite Hasan for the first Test against Pakistan in May. The announcement signals a fresh chapter in Bangladesh’s red-ball ambitions, as the team prepares for a high-stakes home series.

Consistent Domestic Form Rewarded

Tanzid, already a mainstay in Bangladesh’s white-ball setups, now gets his long-awaited chance in the longer format. With one ODI century, six ODI fifties, and an impressive tally of 11 T20I half-centuries, his aggressive intent is well known. But it’s his first-class record that sealed the deal — 5 centuries in 25 matches and a solid average of 40.72.

Meanwhile, Amite Hasan’s elevation comes on the back of remarkable consistency in domestic cricket. Boasting 11 first-class centuries in 49 appearances and a stellar average of 49.32, his credentials are undeniable. His recent knock of 162 in the Bangladesh Cricket League in Sylhet further reinforced his suitability for Test cricket.

Chief Selector Backs Young Talent

Chief selector Habibul Bashar emphasized the deliberate and patient approach behind their selection.

“Tanzid has been in our thoughts for Test cricket. He has a very good first-class record and we felt he deserved the opportunity to showcase his ability in Tests. He has a sound technique and plenty of natural ability. We are confident that if he gets the chance, he can perform well in the longer format.”

Bashar also praised Amite’s temperament, a quality vital for success in Test cricket.

“Amite has earned his call-up as he has been one of the most consistent batters in our first-class cricket. His temperament stands out and we believe it is well suited for Test cricket. This format demands patience and discipline, and he has shown those qualities over a sustained period. Both these players have time on their side and can serve Bangladesh for a very long period.”

Squad Reinforced with Key Returns

The selectors also welcomed back experienced campaigners Shoriful Islam and Taskin Ahmed, bolstering the pace attack. Taskin, who last played his 17th Test against West Indies in December 2024, returns with valuable experience. The inclusion of offspinner Nayeem Hasan adds balance to the squad.

Notable Exclusions

As new doors open, some players have been left out. Fast bowlers Khaled Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud, along with batter Jaker Ali and spinner Hasan Murad, were omitted from the 15-member squad.
