The Pressure Mounts for Mumbai Indians
Mumbai Indians (MI) currently find themselves in a precarious position during the 2026 Indian Premier League season. Occupying eighth place on the points table after two consecutive losses, the team is searching for stability. While batting fireworks have become the norm in modern T20 cricket, MI’s bowling unit has struggled significantly, with five of their bowlers maintaining an economy rate of 12 or higher. As they prepare to return to the Wankhede Stadium to face Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the spotlight remains firmly on their leading pace spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah.
The Wicket Drought and Strategic Context
To date, both Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult remain without a wicket in the tournament. The situation has been compounded by inconsistent support from other bowlers. Trent Boult, traditionally a powerhouse in the powerplay, has struggled throughout 2026, managing only two wickets in 16 overs across both the SA20 and IPL formats, while leaking runs at 9.62 per over. Meanwhile, Shardul Thakur, despite being the team’s current leading wicket-taker with four dismissals, has been expensive, conceding runs at a rate of 12.88.
With AM Ghazanfar also struggling to contain batters, the opposition has largely adopted a tactical approach of playing out Bumrah with minimal risk while attacking the other end. This has placed immense pressure on the rest of the MI bowling core to execute their plans effectively.
Kieron Pollard on Bumrah: “No Cause for Concern”
Addressing the media on Saturday, Mumbai Indians batting coach Kieron Pollard urged for perspective regarding Bumrah’s performance. Rather than focusing on individual statistics, Pollard highlighted the evolving nature of T20 cricket, where economy often serves as a form of attack.
“When you look at T20 cricket now, the way that it’s going, you can’t really think much about wickets,” Pollard explained. “Sometimes the best form of attack is also defense. We’re not looking too much into the wicketless nature of Jasprit Bumrah. He’s a world-class bowler. When the time comes to get wickets, he’ll get wickets. If not, and he’s economical, we’ll accept that as well.”
Pollard emphasized that the coaching staff remains unified in their support of the pacer. He noted, “We don’t look at cricket as that. Cricket is a team sport. It’s about coming together as one and trying to get the desired result. For us, he’s fine, he’s fit, he’s firing.”
Addressing Pace and Tactical Evolution
Observers have noted that Bumrah’s bowling speeds have appeared lower than his usual high-octane standards, often failing to break the 140kph mark. When questioned about this, Pollard maintained that the team is not worried about a lack of velocity. “If the ball is going at 100 knots out of the ground, you don’t want to fight fire with fire, right? You’ve got to try something different. We are not concerned about Jasprit Bumrah. There’s no issues.”
Looking Ahead to the RCB Clash
Bumrah will look to find his rhythm against a familiar opponent in RCB. Historically, he has been successful against them, boasting 29 wickets—the second-best tally by any bowler against the franchise. However, RCB enters the contest with high momentum, having demonstrated a fearless, attacking batting approach that consistently clears the 200-run mark.
Reflecting on the challenges ahead, Pollard stressed the importance of mindset and execution. “It’s difficult for the guys. We just try to continue to encourage them. We try to work as hard as possible on execution and understanding how we can get them out or restrict them. It’s bat versus ball on the day and who cracks first. We are going to hold strong as a bowling unit. On any given day, a couple of guys might go for runs, but hopefully, at the end, we can average it out and stay within that par total.”
As MI returns to the Wankhede, the team hopes that tactical adjustments and strong conversations will translate into a much-needed victory, silencing critics and getting their campaign back on track.
