A Resounding Start to the BCL Season
The latest edition of the Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL) commenced from April 21 to 24, delivering high-intensity red-ball cricket that kept fans on the edge of their seats. As the dust settled on the opening round, it was North Zone and East Zone who emerged as the clear frontrunners, both securing comprehensive victories to signal their intent for the championship trophy. North Zone cruised to a ten-wicket win over South Zone, while East Zone asserted their authority by defeating Central Zone by an innings and 53 runs.
Amite Hasan’s Masterclass Seals East Zone Dominance
Perhaps the most remarkable story of the round unfolded at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, where Amite Hasan delivered a performance that has surely put him on the radar for a maiden Test call-up. Amite’s journey in this match is a testament to the unpredictable nature of cricket; initially dropped from the playing XI, he was drafted in as a concussion substitute for Jaker Ali. He did not waste his opportunity.
Amite anchored the East Zone innings with a magnificent 162, displaying immense patience and technical prowess. His knock spanned six hours and 42 minutes, during which he faced 265 deliveries and struck 18 boundaries. His partnership-building was exemplary: he shared a crucial 161-run stand for the fourth wicket with the experienced Mushfiqur Rahim, who contributed a composed 83, followed by a 107-run partnership with Yasir Ali, who remained unbeaten on 79. Not to be outdone, captain Akbar Ali—fresh off leading the Rangpur Division to NCL titles—recorded his third first-class century. His 121-run knock included 15 boundaries and two massive sixes. North Zone eventually reached 426, gaining a lead of 112.
Despite a valiant effort from South Zone’s Sofor Ali, who claimed an impressive 5 for 99, the momentum had already swung firmly in favor of the North. In the second innings, Robiul Haque proved too hot to handle for the South batters. His fiery spell of 5 for 53 skittled South Zone for 172. Chasing a meager target of 61, Sabbir Hossain ensured a swift conclusion, smashing an unbeaten 54 off just 35 balls to seal a ten-wicket win.
