Out or Not Out? Nitish Rana’s Dismissal Sparks Debate
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) won their second game in succession with an eight-wicket margin on Tuesday night. Delhi Capitals (DC) won the toss and chose to bat, but failed to put scoreboard pressure on their opposition with a below-par score of 155/7 from their 20 overs.
Nitish Rana’s dismissal on Tuesday night sparked a massive debate on social media due to a curious incident taking place. On the third ball of the tenth over, bowled by Noor Ahmad, Nitish tried to play a sweep shot. Kartik Sharma, fielding at fine-leg, took an easy catch.

Interestingly, neither the bat nor Sanju Samson’s gloves had made contact with the bails. After the video went viral, fans were left flummoxed as to why the delivery wasn’t called a dead ball. Yet another fan then posted a second video where the bail could be seen falling, perhaps due to the windy conditions in Delhi.

Should the Umpires Have Called it Dead Ball?
As per Rule 20 in the MCC laws, the ball can be called dead under various conditions. The first condition is the ‘settled ball’ when a fielder, wicketkeeper or bowler claims the ball after a shot is played or left alone and the ball is ‘settled’ in the hands of the opposition. As per the Umpire’s call condition, the ball becomes dead when the batter taking strike pulls off due to noise or sudden movement, injuries, or interference from fans in games.
Since the bail had fallen on its own inexplicably, in this case, the batter’s dismissal is valid, and the ball couldn’t be called a dead ball.

Chasing 156 to win the game, the visiting side lost skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad for six runs. Sameer Rizvi caught the 29-year-old to give the returning Lungi Ngidi his first wicket of the night. Urvil Patel was brilliantly stumped by KL Rahul for 17 off Axar Patel‘s bowling to leave the Super Kings at 45/2 in the seventh over.
Kartik Sharma joined Sanju in the middle, and the pair took the side home without further damage. Sharma hit the winning boundary to take his score to 41 off 31 balls with four boundaries and two sixes. Samson was not out on 87 from just 52 balls and hit seven boundaries and six sixes.
