A New Talent Enters the Fold
The anticipation for the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup is reaching a fever pitch, and for the Indian women’s cricket team, the road to the tournament brings a blend of seasoned expertise and fresh energy. Among the most exciting developments is the maiden call-up of Nandani Sharma, a rising star who caught the attention of selectors and fans alike during the Women’s Premier League (WPL).
Jemimah Rodrigues, who captained Nandani at the Delhi Capitals, is among those most excited to see the young bowler transition to the international stage. Speaking at an International Institute of Sports and Management (IISM) event in Mumbai, Rodrigues highlighted the journey they took with Nandani. ‘When we got her, we didn’t know what to expect. We knew she had the talent, but when she came on the bigger stage in the WPL, in front of the world, she was consistent in every single game,’ Rodrigues noted.
WPL Success as a Launchpad
Nandani’s rise to prominence was nothing short of cinematic. She made waves early in the WPL, delivering a spectacular hat-trick and a five-wicket haul in just her second appearance. By the end of the season, her tally of 17 wickets ranked her as the joint-highest wicket-taker in the tournament. This performance proved she was not a flash in the pan, but a consistent threat capable of performing under pressure.
Her inclusion in the T20 World Cup squad comes as India navigates some injury setbacks. With Amanjot Kaur sidelined with a back injury and Kashvee Gautam ruled out due to a knee issue, the team needed a reliable replacement. Nandani joins a pace attack featuring Renuka Singh, Kranti Gaud, and Arundhati Reddy, bringing a new dimension to the Indian bowling unit.
Head Coach Amol Muzumdar’s Strategy
India’s head coach, Amol Muzumdar, is equally optimistic about the integration of new talent. ‘I would like to welcome Nandani into the squad. Really looking forward to working along with her. We have seen her exploits in the WPL and domestic cricket as well,’ Muzumdar stated. The team is currently setting the groundwork for success with a camp at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, beginning May 8, before heading to the United Kingdom on May 22.
The upcoming three-match T20 series against England is being viewed as the ultimate testing ground. Reflecting on last year’s historic 3-2 series win in England, Muzumdar remains confident. ‘Travelling to England is always a challenge, but this team is ready for it. The experience is there, the confidence is there. All we need to do is travel well and play well.’
Adjusting the Plan
Losing a player of Amanjot Kaur’s caliber has necessitated tactical shifts. Muzumdar acknowledged the difficulty of the situation, noting, ‘It is very difficult to replace somebody like Aman because she is consistently doing well for India. But injuries are part of the game. She will be out for four to five months, and I hope she recovers and comes back stronger.’ To compensate, India has brought in power-hitter Bharti Fulmali and left-arm spin-allrounder Radha Yadav to bolster the lower-middle order and provide added flexibility.
A Hunger for Continued Success
The morale in the camp is exceptionally high, fueled by the memory of India’s maiden Women’s ODI World Cup victory last year. Rodrigues emphasized that this squad is far from complacent. ‘This team is hungrier to win again and again,’ she remarked. With the backing of experienced leaders and the injection of youthful vigor, the Indian team is looking to make a massive statement at the upcoming T20 World Cup, starting June 12. Fans will be watching closely to see if Nandani Sharma can replicate her WPL magic on the global stage.
