Barbados Tridents: A New Era for Cricket in Barbados

The Barbados Royals will be returning to their roots, rebranding as the Barbados Tridents, the name under which they played the first eight seasons of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) before the renaming in 2021.

A Return to National Colors

The franchise will also be returning to Barbados’ national colors, with a redesigned blue-and-yellow jersey replacing the pink kit, in recognition of the country’s deep cricketing history and enduring national pride. This move is part of a three-year partnership, known as the “One Barbados” initiative, which aims to contribute to a larger national movement.

The rebranding will extend to the women’s team, which is one of three teams in the Women’s CPL that was launched in 2022. The partnership is intended to make the relaunched side a year-round national asset, serving as a symbol of national pride and ambition.

A Partnership for the Future

Royals Sports Group, which took over the franchise in 2021, has agreed in principle to the Barbados government becoming a minority co-investor in the franchise, subject to approvals. The majority ownership and day-to-day management of the franchise will remain unchanged, with the team continuing to be under Royals Sports Group.

As Barbados marks its 60th year of independence, the One Barbados partnership is seen as a landmark moment for the nation. “The return to the Barbados Tridents reflects our confidence, our pride, and our ambition as a nation, as we begin to chart the path towards our next 60 years,” said Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley.

Cricket has long been a core pillar of Barbados’ national identity and self-determination. The partnership is a fitting way to represent the nation, with a name and colors that speak to the country’s history and pride.

A Charity Match for a Good Cause

As part of the initiative, the franchise will host a “Pink Promise” charity match during the CPL season to raise funds for charitable causes in Barbados. This event will be a great opportunity for the team to give back to the community and make a positive impact.

A New Era for the Barbados Tridents

The rebranding is seen as a powerful statement of pride and intent. “Relaunching the franchise as the Barbados Tridents, playing in the national colors, is a powerful statement of pride and intent,” said Manoj Badale, lead owner of Royals Sports Group.

The team is committed to sustained success, with the goal of bringing home both the men’s and women’s CPL titles. Rovman Powell is the current captain of the Barbados franchise, which finished last on the table in 2025. The team has a rich history, with two CPL titles in 2014 and 2019, and finished runners-up in 2015 and 2022.

The 2026 season is set to begin on August 8, with the Barbados Tridents playing their first game against the Jamaica Kingsmen on August 11. With the rebranding and new partnership, the team is ready to start a new era and make a strong comeback in the CPL.
